Welcome to Goalgi: The Future of Medicine Needs Your Help
/Hi everyone and welcome to Goalgi’s launch page and blog. I’m Ben, the Executive Director of Goalgi, and I’m really excited to introduce our core team and explain a little bit about what we’re all about.
Our core founders: my partners Andrew, Kris and I, are all professionals with significant experience behind the research bench as well as in the clinic. On hospital floors, we have seen patients desperate for new medical treatments. In the lab, we have watched with growing concern as funding for this research has become harder and harder to come by. Research in the United States has produced amazing advances in medicine—we have access to the brightest and most innovative scientific minds in the world—but many of these talented people are simply not receiving the funding they need to develop the cures and treatments of tomorrow. Of course, just like you, our lives have been touched by disease on a personal level as well. I recently watched as my incredibly vibrant grandmother changed before my eyes and eventually passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. As well, I suffer from a relatively rare and chronic form of migraines that have at times caused me to be quite debilitated. Very recent research into my own condition has helped me tremendously, and through Goalgi, we want to bring this sort of help to people in the United States and all around the world.
Migraines, pneumonia, and COPD affect hundreds of thousands of Americans
Currently, most research funding comes from government grants and private foundations. A few diseases receive a disproportionate amount of these dollars. Organizations like Susan G Komen have brought enormous awareness and millions of dollars to diseases like breast cancer; but sadly, many other diseases that affect millions of people are not being afforded the same treatment. Migraines, pneumonia, and COPD affect hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. COPD, is the third leading cause of death in the United States. And yet, we simply don’t provide researchers with the funding and tools necessary to bring us innovative treatments and cures to these conditions.
Your contribution can make a direct impact on the future of treatment
This is where Goalgi comes in. We are building a not-for-profit crowdfunding platform to raise money for significant new research, focusing on these underfunded diseases. If you or someone you know has been affected by a disease that Goalgi is involved in researching, you will be able to help fund work that is directed at treating or curing that disease. If there is a disease you would like us to work on, let us know! We are partnering with major hospitals, laboratories and universities across the country and our scientific team will hand-pick promising research projects. After you help to successfully fund projects, you will receive regular updates from the researchers showing how your assistance is helping the cause. In addition, all donations will be tax-deductible under the regulations set forth by the IRS regarding 501(c)3 organizations.
Our mission is to extend and improve lives. If you join us and we fund research that helps even just one patient, we’ll have succeeded together. And of course we won’t stop there. We couldn’t be more excited to begin our journey alongside you.
While we build partnerships with institutions and put a little more spit and polish on our platform (look for beta testing invitations soon!), we will begin showing you ways that you can help disease research right now. We'll be showcasing other organizations and groups are doing good work right now here on our site. If you're interested in getting on board with us, simply sign up for our email list and we will bring these opportunities right to you. We hope you’ll follow our progress here on this blog, and at facebook and @goalgi on twitter as we prepare to launch in full. Thanks so much for reading, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Email inquiries can be sent to contact@goalgi.org.
